Places to visit
• Quaint, sleepy fishing villages, like Filey and Robin Hood’s Bay on the beautiful and dramatic
North Yorkshire Coast, spanning more than 45 miles, with stunning cliffs
• Whitby – the historic port on the River Esk, with the ancient abbey which inspired Bram Stoker’s
Dracula, connections with the explorer Captain Cook, an excellent Victorian museum, seafood
restaurants and heritage walks
• York – the famous historic city with medieval thoroughfares, the largest medieval gothic cathedral
north of the Alps, excellent shopping, boat tours, attractions including the Yorkshire Museum
(2000 years of Yorkshire heritage), the National Railway Museum, Yorkshire Air Museum,
dungeons and art galleries, Europe’s finest medieval guild hall and the Jorvik Viking Centre,
bringing 10th century York to life - the trading hub of the Viking world
• Captain Cook Country route – named after Britain’s greatest seafarer and explorer and a land
of contrasts, this exciting marked route stretches from Whitby, along miles of unspoiled heritage
coastline to maritime Hartlepool and Cook’s birthplace in Middlesborough, with plenty of heritage
attractions; outdoor activities - and of course, eating out
• Herriott Country – named after one of the world’s best loved writers, James Herriott –who lived
and worked in the cobbled market town of Thirsk in the 1940s, inspiring his tales of country
veterinary life and the television series "All Creatures Great and Small." Attractions in the area
include the actual home and surgery featured in the stories where Herriott lived and worked,
falconry centres, stately homes and museums, a working water mill and farm visitor centres • Fountains Abbey, Rievaulx Abbey, Terrace and Temples – a World Heritage site, plus the
dramatic and extensive remains of the largest monastic establishment in Britain, with superb
views and classical temples

• Market days – colourful, weekly street markets in nearby villages such as Malton,
Thornton le Dale, Helmsley and Pickering
• North York Moors National Park, the East Coast and the Wolds – beautiful and tranquil,
rich in wildlife, dramatic views, fossils, unusual rock formations and wildflowers, including the
coastal Cleveland Way – ideal for walking, cycling and climbing. The county's greatest asset is its
wonderful scenery – enjoy it on foot, by car or steam railway. For the more adventurous, there is
the demanding terrain of remote uplands, spectacular limestone and gritstone crags and the
secrets of the limestone potholes. Both the Dales and the Moors have been brought into people's
living rooms across the world by the success of television series, such as the stories of James
Herriot and the Heartbeat adventures
• The Deep – the world’s only submarium, with the story of the world’s oceans on a dramatic
journey back in time and into the future, including the world’s deepest viewing tunnel, sharkfeeding
shows and diver presentations
• Flamingoland – 375 acre theme park and zoo, with rides, shows and a zoo with over 1,000
animals, attractions and activities for everyone
• Beamish, North of England Open Air Museum – find out all about life in Northern England
in 1825 and 1913 at this multi-award-winning Living Museum of the Year 2002, including a town,
a home farm, a colliery village, a manor house, a steam locomotive, a Victorian fairground and
transportation
• Dalby Forest – The Great Yorkshire Forest with over 8000 acres of woodland, wildlife and
scenery to explore and enjoy. The Forest includes play areas for children, barbeques and
waymarked trails for people of all abilities
Historic houses
• Castle Howard – the grandest house in the North of England, a spectacular 18th century palace,
known worldwide as the location for the television series Brideshead Revisited. Surrounded by
1,000 acres of parkland with lakes, fountains, woodland gardens, rose gardens and a temple
• Raby Castle – the splendid, romantic medieval castle built for the Nevill dynasty – once the most
powerful warrior family in the North of England. The history of this fortress spans almost 1,000
years - a stronghold of soaring towers, turrets and impregnable walls and a symbol of their
wealth, power and ambition. Features include sumptuous interiors, important artworks a 200 acre
deer park, walled ornamental gardens and 18th century stables (now housing a horse-drawn
coach and carriage museum). A nearby woodland walk takes you to High Force, England’s highest
unbroken waterfall, thunders 70 feet (21 metres) over massive rocks
• Burton Agnes Hall – Elizabethan house, Norman manor house and award-winning gardens
• Sledmere House – the premier stately home for the Yorkshire Wolds and one of the most
picturesque and tranquil places to visit. Exquisitely decorated inside with a fine collection of
antique furniture, beautiful pottery, fine paintings, Roman Catholic chapel and a library with rare
books. The House stands in acres parkland, including an 18th Century with beautiful gardens, a
pond with fish and fountains and lovely views
